Two large roundabouts are teeming with wildflowers, insects, birds and bees thanks to a community-led initiative.

Trafford Council worked with local people to create the beautiful displays at the Trees estate, Stretford, much to the enjoyment of residents and visitors.

Consultation started last year and since then the roundabouts on Elm Drive have been planted with a range of colourful blooms and grasses. More species are set to be added by local contractor Paul Grainge Ground Maintenance, to develop the wildlife haven further.

A spokesperson for the Council said:

“Our teams have planted wildflowers in other location in Trafford but this is the only project where the community has been at the forefront of the planning process.

“Local people were really keen to brighten up the neighbourhood in a way that would have environmental benefits as well as a visual wow factor. The success of this project shows how public spaces can be transformed.

“Together we looked at several ideas before agreeing that wildflower planning would give the best balance of visual impact, biodiversity benefits, and long-term sustainability.

“Wildflowers are an attractive alternative to grassed areas. They are easier to look after than traditional bedding plant displays while also offering a valuable habitat for bees.”

Care was taken to maintain visibility and road safety with a margin left around the edge of each roundabout.
