The move follows an online consultation in which residents were asked what they wanted Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funds to be spent on.

People overwhelmingly called for investment and improvement for playground equipment, areas of play for children, and measures such as planting, lighting, seating and footpaths in public parks and gardens.

The Council currently has £1.19m from housing and commercial developments to allocate, under its new Local/Neighbourhood Community Infrastructure Levy Spending Protocol.

Executive Committee members have agreed to channel £450,000 to Longford Park in Stretford and £184,465 each to the north, south, central and west localities of the borough.

A total of 828 people took part in the six-week consultation with half of them ranking playground equipment as their top priority and another 25% citing public parks and gardens as their number one spending choice.

The CIL is a mandatory charge on developments over 100 square metres and is charged by size. Its aim is to ensure money can be spent on local facilities that will support new homes and other buildings.

The £1.19m to be spent is 15% of the overall sum collected since the levy was introduced 11 years ago, with the majority ringfenced for roads and transport, flood defences, schools and education, medical facilities, sports and recreation.

Future funds will be allocated in line with planned house building identified in Trafford’s emerging Local Plan.

Cllr Liz Patel, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Economy and Regeneration said:

“We thank everyone who took the time to participate in our consultation. People’s views are clear – they really want this money to be spent on places for children to play and our green spaces that provide so much relaxation and enjoyment to our residents.

“We are delighted to be able to carry out people’s wishes with money being channelled to every locality of the borough to complement wide-ranging improvements that are already under way.

“This combined improvement and investment will support the Council’s priorities of facilitating the best possible start in life for children, healthy lives for adults and access to high-quality culture, heritage and leisure facilities for all.”
