Brownfield Land Register

The Town and Country Planning (Brownfield Land Register) Regulations 2017 requires all Local Planning Authorities (LPAs) in England to prepare, maintain and publish registers of previously developed (brownfield) land.

Since the publication of the first Brownfield Land Register (BLR) by the 31 December 2017 deadline, there is a requirement for LPAs to review their registers at least once a year.

The purpose of the Brownfield Land Register is to provide up-to-date and consistent information on sites that LPAs consider to be appropriate for residential development having regard to the criteria set out in the regulations. Importantly sites included on the Register must be in accordance with Criteria set out in Regulation 4.

The application of these legal tests means that Trafford’s Brownfield Land Register is a subset of the sites included within its overall housing land supply, and is therefore not necessarily the full extent of brownfield land which is contained within its much more comprehensive Housing Land Supply position (as at 31 March 2025).

No sites are currently proposed for inclusion within Part 2 of Trafford’s Brownfield Land Register.
