Self-build and custom housebuilding

You can register your interest in building your own home in Trafford.

Self-build and custom housebuilding means building a home to live in yourself. You might build it yourself or work with a builder or developer.

The register helps us understand the demand for self-build plots. We use this information when preparing planning policies and considering how land is used in Trafford.

Who can register

To join the register, you must:

  • be aged 18 or over
  • be a British citizen or have the legal right to live in the UK
  • intend to live in the home as your main residence

You can register on your own or as part of a group or association. Each member of a group must meet the same criteria.

What registering means

  • It does not guarantee that a plot will be made available to you
  • It does not mean that planning permission will be granted
  • It does help Trafford plan for future housing demand

We assess the level of interest in self-build locally and consider this when preparing the Local Plan and housing strategies.

The council has a duty to grant enough planning permissions to meet the demand shown on the register. This does not guarantee a plot or a personal permission, but we use the register to guide local planning.

You can read the full legislation in the Self-build and Custom Housebuilding (Register) Regulations 2016.
