Scheme proposals
We are working with Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) to deliver the wider Sale West to Altrincham network improvements (SWANI).
This partnership programme has delivered new and improved bus stops, junction improvements and safer crossings in Trafford. View our past major highways projects.
The proposed Sale town centre improvements are the final scheme of the SWANI programme. Subject to funding approvals, construction is expected to start in early 2027.
This scheme focuses on two key junctions:
- Springfield Road, Tatton Road and School Road
- Broad Road and Hope Road
What the scheme will do
The improvements aim to:
- make walking, wheeling and cycling easier and safer
- improve connections between the town centre, nearby bus stops and the Metrolink stop
This will help you move through busy areas more comfortably and confidently.
Proposed changes
Proposed changes include:
- Improved walking facilities at both junctions. Space and accessibility are currently limited.
- Better connections to local bus stops and the Metrolink stop. This will make east to west travel through the town centre easier
- Removal of the straight-ahead route from Tatton Road into Springfield Road to help traffic move more smoothly and safely
- An improved layout at the Broad Road junction
- Widened kerb lines at the Hope Road junction, next to Sale Park and Ride. This will create more space for people and an improved footway and crossing area
