Greater Manchester Pothole Fund
In September 2026, it was announced that we would receive £4.99 million from a £60 million fund to help tackle potholes across Greater Manchester.
Types of improvement
We are utilising this funding in several different ways to ensure maximum impact and benefit to the highways in Trafford:
Patching
Small sections of the existing surface of the highway are removed in targeted locations to arrest repeat visits by highway maintenance gangs and to extend the life of the entire road section.
This work will begin in September 2026 and run for approximately 5 months.
Surface (or preventative) treatment
Material is laid over the top of the old highway surface. It can extend the life of the road by up to 10 to 15 years and protects the structure from water ingress.
This work will take place in Q1 of the 2027/28 financial year. Schemes will be available on our surface treatment programme.
Resurfacing
Large sections or all of the existing surface of the highway is removed and replaced by a new surface layer.
