Going into hospital
Before you go into hospital, think about who will look after things while you are away. You may need to arrange with a family member or friend to help out.
Some people go into hospital in an emergency or with very little notice, which makes planning ahead more difficult. This page is here to support you, your family, or your carer if you need to go into hospital at the last minute.
If you look after someone else
If you care for a family member, friend or neighbour, you will need to find someone to take over this role while you are in hospital. They may also need to continue this role when you return home and are recovering.
If you are unable to find someone, let us know as soon as possible. We can arrange temporary care or respite support for the person you care for.
If you are a carer, you may be entitled to support. To find out more, call Trafford Carer's Centre on 0161 848 2400 (Monday to Thursday, 9am to 8pm. Friday 9am to 4pm).
Looking after your home
You should prepare your home before hospital by making sure it's safe and ready to return. This could include:
- Arranging for someone to check on your home
- Asking someone to pick up the post
- Paying bills or managing finances
- Letting a trusted friend or neighbour know you will be away
Money and benefits
If you or someone in your family needs to go into hospital, it might affect your benefits. This depends on the type of benefits you claim and how long you’re in hospital. It could also affect your partner’s or carer’s benefits.
You can find out more on the Turn2us website.
Pets and animal care
If you have a pet, additional arrangements will need to be made before you go into hospital. Ask your friends, family and neighbours if they can care for your pet during your hospital stay and when you are recovering (if needed).
If you are no longer able to look after your pet, these charities and organisations might be able to help:
- Blue Cross has a rehoming unit in Greater Manchester
- National Careline gives information on what happens to your pet if you have to go into care
- Cinnamon Trust provides short-term or long-term care for pets whose owners have gone into care
- RSPCA can help find your pet a new home through its specialist re-homing service
