Funded nursing care

Part of: Paying for residential and nursing care

Funded nursing care (FNC) is when the NHS pays for the nursing care part of nursing home fees. The NHS pays a flat rate directly to the care home towards the cost of this care.

To receive funded nursing care, the NHS will first check if you qualify for NHS continuing healthcare (CHC) by completing a needs assessment. If you do not qualify for CHC funding, you may be able to qualify for funded nursing care instead.

You can find more information about funding nursing care on the NHS website.

Eligibility for funded nursing care

You may be eligible if:

  • You live in a care home registered to provide nursing care
  • You don’t qualify for full NHS Continuing Healthcare
  • You need nursing care from a registered nurse

Your eligibility should be reviewed annually or if your health needs significantly change.
