Paying for residential and nursing care

Contents

If your care assessment shows that your needs are best met in a care home as a temporary or permanent resident, you may be entitled to financial support to help with your care fees.

How much you will pay will depend on your financial assessment, which takes into consideration how much you have in savings and assets. You can find out more about how much you might need to pay for care.

How much the Council can pay for your care home

The amount the Council can pay for your care home is based on our agreed framework prices and your care and support needs assessment.

The current weekly rates are:

  • Residential and nursing care: £950 per week

You need to speak to your social worker to find out about your home care costs.

If you choose not to have a financial assessment or you do not provide your financial information, we will ask you to pay the full cost of the services you have.

If you select a care home that costs more than the Council’s agreed framework price, the extra amount is called a ‘top-up’ fee

Personal Expenditure Allowance (PEA)

When a financial assessment is completed for those receiving residential and nursing care services, you will be left with a minimum amount of income. This is called the Personal Expenditure Allowance (PEA).

This amount is set nationally each year: the 2026/2027 amount is £31.80 per week.
