Legionella

Part of: Health and safety

Hot and cold water systems can provide an environment where Legionella bacteria can flourish. If these bacteria become airborne and are inhaled, they can cause a serious illness called Legionnaires' disease.

Premises at risk

The following premises are more susceptible to Legionella bacteria:

  • premises with water systems incorporating a cooling tower or evaporative condenser
  • buildings with large and complex hot and cold water systems
  • any building where the spa pool occupants are particularly susceptible, such as hospitals or care homes
  • leisure centres

Preventing Legionella in the workplace

Workplaces are legally required to conduct a suitable Legionella risk assessment and implement appropriate controls to mitigate the risk.

You can read more about Legionella in the workplace on the HSE website.
