How your application will be decided

Part of: Animal welfare licensing

Contents

After we receive your form and fee, an Animal Welfare Officer will contact you to arrange an inspection.

All premises are inspected before a licence is granted. Inspectors will check:

  • that records are complete and meet licence conditions
  • that risk assessments, policies and procedures are in place and reviewed
  • staff training and supervision
  • knowledge of the species being cared for
  • that premises meet legal welfare, safety and environment standards

Star rating scheme

When you apply you will be given a star rating from 1 to 5. New businesses, or those without a history of good practice, may be awarded fewer stars at first.

Low-risk, well-run businesses can be awarded up to 5 stars. Higher-risk businesses can be awarded up to 4 stars.

Appeals and re-ratings

If you are unhappy with your rating, you can appeal within 21 days of receiving your licence. Appeals are reviewed by a manager who was not involved in your inspection.

You can also request a re-rating if you have made improvements. The fee is £50 per hour.

To appeal or request a re-rating, email animal.welfare@trafford.gov.uk.
