Choosing your childcare

There are different types of childcare and early education in Trafford. The right option depends on your child’s age, your family circumstances and the hours you need.

Search for childcare near you in the Trafford Directory.

Types of childcare

Nurseries

Care and learning for babies and young children. Many nurseries open all year and offer full-day or part-day sessions.

The Council also runs two local authority day nurseries.

Pre-school playgroups

Sessional childcare for children aged 2 to 5. Usually open during school term time.

Childminders

Registered childcare in the childminder’s own home. Often offer flexible hours and can provide wraparound care for school-aged children.

Out-of-school clubs

Before and after school sessions for children up to age 14, often based at schools or community venues.

Holiday schemes

Childcare during school holidays. Run by schools, childcare providers and community organisations.

Things to think about

When choosing childcare, you may want to consider:

  • Opening hours and flexibility
  • Cost and what funding the provider accepts
  • The environment and activities
  • Staff experience and qualifications
  • Ofsted inspection rating

Read inspection reports on the Ofsted website.
