Childminders care for children of almost any age for more than two hours a day.

To become a childminder, you will likely need to register with Ofsted or a childminder agency. There are different registers you can join, and guidance on choosing the right one on GOV.UK.

How to become a childminder

You can find a step-by-step guide on how to become a childminder on GOV.UK.

You must:

  • Apply to a register with Ofsted or a childminder agency
  • Complete a health declaration form (usually through your GP)
  • Do a risk assessment of the premises
  • Apply for the relevant insurance

Training and qualifications

You must complete Paediatric First Aid and Child Protection (Safeguarding) training before you register as a childminder. For details about how to access this training, email earlyyearscpd@trafford.gov.uk. 

You will also need a copy of the EYFS Statutory Framework for Childminders, which can be downloaded from GOV.UK.

Childminder pre-registration training

Although there is no requirement to complete a childminding pre-registration course, you may find the course extremely beneficial. This is because you will need to demonstrate your awareness of the framework and requirements as part of the registration process.

If you can demonstrate that you can meet the requirements of the EYFS Statutory Framework, you may not need to complete a pre-registration training course. For more information, contact:

DBS checks

You will be required to complete a DBS check for yourself and anyone who lives or works in your home aged 16 or over. 

Tax and insurance

You will be self-employed and responsible for running your own business and obtaining the correct insurance. HMRC offer online business advice for those who are self-employed as well as information about childminding expenses.
