Fly-tipping

What is fly-tipping

Fly tipping is the illegal dumping of items and is a serious criminal offence.

If your waste is fly-tipped, by you or by someone else for you, you could face a £450 fixed penalty notice or an unlimited fine. It is also an offence to allow fly-tipping.

Report fly-tipping

You are fly-tipping if you leave items:

  • beside street litter bins or recycling bins
  • on the floor of communal bin areas
  • outside closed recycling centres or charity shops
  • in the alleyway behind your property
  • anywhere that isn’t a registered waste facility or container

Fines for fly-tipping

If you are caught fly-tipping, you could be issued with a £450 fixed penalty notice.

For more serious offences, the penalty can increase to an unlimited fine and up to five years in prison. Vehicles used in the commission of the offence can also be seized and crushed.
