You must make sure your vehicle meets our policy on age and emission standards:

  • Private hire vehicles: must be less than 10 years old
  • Wheelchair accessible private hire vehicles: must be less than 15 years old
  • Hackney carriages: must be less than 15 years old
  • All vehicles must meet Euro emission standards:
    • Petrol: Euro 4 (vehicles registered from 1 January 2006)
    • Diesel: Euro 6 (vehicles registered after September 2015)
  • The exceptional condition (age) policy does not apply
  • Vehicles that have been written off (any category) cannot be licensed

Imported vehicles

To licence an imported vehicle, it must have:

  • an IVA/SVA marker on the V5 log book, or
  • an IVA certificate

If the V5 does not show this, the vehicle must be tested to obtain a basic IVA certificate, even if it is more than 10 years old.

Companies and non-Trafford drivers

If you are a company or an individual who does not hold a Trafford driver licence, you must provide a Basic DBS certificate (dated within 12 months) for each director.
