Renting on benefits
Part of:
Renting privately
If you receive benefits or are on a low income, you may be entitled to help towards your rent. There is more information about housing benefits on our site.
Most private rented properties in Trafford are more expensive than the maximum benefit entitlement. This means you will have to pay a shortfall on top of what you get from your benefits. Make sure you can afford the shortfall before signing up for the property.
You can apply for a Discretionary Housing Payment if you are already living in the property and are struggling to afford the shortfall.
It is illegal for a landlord or letting agent to refuse to rent to you because you receive benefits.
Some websites specifically advertise properties to those in receipt of benefits:
- DSS Move
- Open Rent (select the 'accept DSS' filter on advanced search)
- LettingaProperty.com
