They’re just tree-mendous! Keeping the borough beautiful and trimming Trafford’s trees is all in a day’s work for Graham Roberts and his team.
The Trafford Council contractors are out all hours and, in all weathers, pruning, trimming and removing dead wood from the borough’s thousands of trees.
And they are helping Trafford Council celebrate its incredible trees as part of a national celebration event which starts tomorrow (Saturday, November 22) – National Tree Week 2025.
The event, which is organised by the Tree Council, marks the tree planting and trimming season and encourages the public to get involved in as many tree-related activities and celebrations as possible.
Trafford Council looks after 18,000 street trees and more than 50,000 trees in parks, open spaces, and other council owned facilities, such as allotments and car parks which are inspected and maintained on a regular basis.
Graham, pictured left, whose team are working in Flixton, said: “We are out here trimming the trees to remove branches from telephone lines to make it safer for the public. Our job is really important from a safety point of view and to help the trees grow and flourish.”
As part of the Council’s commitment to improving the management of trees, it has a database containing information about the boroughs tree stock, including when they have been inspected, maintained and will be due to be maintained in future.
The Council, which has made addressing the climate crisis a corporate priority, has promised to replace fallen trees on a two to one basis to maintain Trafford’s beautiful green scenery.
The Council also operates a special Tree Adoption Scheme which enables residents and any interested parties to pay for the planting of a tree or a number of trees in a given, suitable, location. Residents can adopt a tree outside their property or chose to have one planted in a park or open space. Details on how you can get involved with Trafford Council’s Tree Adoption Scheme can be found on the council’s website.
Cllr Stephen Adshead, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Highways, Environmental and Traded Services, said:
“Trafford Council is responsible for almost 70,000 trees across our borough and we are proud of each and every one of them. We are committed to a huge tree planting programme and will replace each fallen with tree with two new ones to ensure Trafford stays beautiful.
“Trees are hugely important in a number of ways – not only are they visually stunning, they improve the environment massively by helping create a green environment and mitigate against climate change. They also provide benefits to wildlife and diversity, improve air quality and are an integral part of our borough’s ecosystem.”
