Consultation on how funding should be spent on green space and leisure improvements

Residents are being asked their views on how funding should be spent on green space and leisure improvements across the borough.

Trafford Council is launching an online consultation on its Draft Local/Neighbourhood Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) Spending Protocol.

The draft protocol, which is funded from CIL monies received by the Council, aims to identify priorities for using the circa £1.3m collected to date for local infrastructure improvements.  The Community Infrastructure Levy is money collected by local authorities from developers for new building projects to fund local infrastructure.

It will be focused on public sporting, recreational facilities and open spaces since these provide real benefits for local communities and support the Council’s corporate priorities.  These include providing culture sport and heritage for everyone, addressing the climate crisis and providing healthy and independent lives for everyone.

As part of the consultation, we’re asking residents to rank their preference for how money could be spent on a range of local infrastructure improvements covering areas like public parks and gardens, green spaces and indoor and outdoor leisure and sporting facilities.

The consultation will run from 8 September 2025 to 20 October 2025.

Cllr Liz Patel, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Economy and Regeneration, said:

“The consultation on the draft protocol aims to gather residents’ views on what and where money could be spent in their communities. This will then help us produce the final protocol so we can allocate the resources in a managed way, taking into account the legal requirements of the CIL funding.

“The Council is committed to providing culture, sport and heritage for everyone and the best start for our children and young people. I hope residents take up the opportunity to give us their views.”
