Hundreds of secondary school pupils in Trafford to get a taste of green careers this autumn

Talks, visits and workplace try-outs will make up a programme of exciting events for Trafford secondary schoolchildren as part of Green Careers Week from Monday 3 November.

Trafford Council and partners have teamed up with employers for the initiative showcasing opportunities for careers that will help build a sustainable, green future.

Pupils will discover new and exciting career paths in new areas as well as how traditional roles are evolving to meet environmental challenges. Highlights will include:

  • A ‘workplace safari’ with environmental charity Groundwork Greater Manchester at Trafford Ecology Park, where young people can explore careers in environmental conservation, home energy advice, and sustainability consultancy.

  • Planning and design challenges with Sir Robert McAlpine, which will construct the new Therme resort in Trafford, and LDA Design, which is remodelling Manchester city centre’s iconic Piccadilly Gardens.

  • Hands-on urban forestry session with City of Trees exploring jobs in forestry and routes to get them.

More exciting activities will follow, offering Trafford schools opportunities to tap directly into employer expertise and inspire students.

The Trafford Green Skills Group, chaired by Groundwork Greater Manchester and comprising Trafford Council, Trafford and Stockport College, the Green Skills Academy, Greater Manchester Combined Authority, and others, is organising the initiative.

It was established in 2023 with a shared vision to promote the uptake of jobs and training opportunities in the green economy.

A spokesperson for Trafford Council said:

“Students, teachers, and careers advisors will be getting together with employers and organisations to explore how work is changing and how every job can be a green job.

“Together we will look at the green skills in demand and highlight the opportunities available now and in the future.”
