New support for Trafford families with neurodivergent children

Families in Trafford who have children with ADHD, autism and other neurodivergent conditions can now access support more easily thanks to the launch of a new service in the borough.

The Trafford Neurodiversity Support team provides advice, information and support to help children, young people and their families access a range of services before and after diagnosis. It is a Trafford Council service run in partnership with Barnardo’s, who already provide this type of support in other parts of the country and are now bringing their expertise to Trafford families.

Children and young people do not need any sort of formal diagnosis to benefit from the new Neurodiversity Support team. It is open to all families, whatever stage they are at, from those with initial questions about what help is available in Trafford, to those more familiar with the system who require ongoing support.

Parents and carers wishing to find out more can meet the new Neurodiversity Navigators on the following days at Trafford’s Best Start Family Hubs (no appointment necessary):

  • Best Start Family Hub Central (at Sale West Community Centre): Every Monday 9.30am until 3.30pm
  • Best Start Family Hub West (formerly Partington Children’s Centre): Every Tuesday 9.30am until 3.30pm
  • Best Start Family Hub North (formerly Stretford Children’s Centre): Every Thursday 9.30am until 3.30pm.

Alternatively, navigators can be contacted by email on traffordndsupport@barnardos.co.uk or by calling 0161 5531536.

Cllr George Devlin, Trafford’s Executive Member for Babies, Children and Young People said:

“When your child needs support, we know there is no shortage of help on offer in Trafford, but the system can initially feel overwhelming. That’s why our new Neurodiversity Support team is so important, because it gives families the opportunity to speak to an adviser one-to-one, and get expert advice about what is available for their particular situation.

“The benefit of this new service is that nobody needs to wait for a diagnosis to access the support they need now. Our trained navigators have excellent knowledge of the wide range of services available in Trafford, and they are here to assist parents and families, whatever stage of their journey they are at, to access the help they need.

“Whether your concerns relate to behaviour, sleep, nutrition, relationships or any of the things that can be a challenge with a neurodivergent child or young person, we are here to help. Please don’t struggle in silence – get in touch and find out more about all the support on offer for you in Trafford.”
