Illegal street trader caught selling Manchester United scarves outside football matches is fined

An illegal trader was fined after being caught twice at Old Trafford Metrolink Station on matchdays.

Mr Andrew Lowe, 53, of Peel Hall Road, Wythenshawe, was found selling Manchester United scarves to supporters heading to the game against Real Sociedad, a 4-1 win for United, back in March.

He had been previously warned by Trafford Council’s Enforcement Team that he could not trade without a licence.

Manchester Magistrates heard that when approached, Mr Lowe tried to bundle the scarves for sale back into his holdall, before making his way from the area.

However, he was back again in May for the home team’s 0-2 defeat by West Ham, selling scarves for £15. When questioned by a Council officer, he made threats and argued.

Magistrates found Mr Lowe guilty of two offences of illegally street trading. He was fined £200 with a victim surcharge of £40 and costs of £100, totalling £340.

Cllr Rose Thompson, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Communities and Safety, said:

“This is another great result from our Licensing Enforcement Team. Mr Lowe was warned but took no notice. When questioned, he was abusive to our officer. We work hard to protect legitimate traders who follow the rules and we do not tolerate this sort of behaviour.”
