Work to shape a beautiful, natural landscape around large scale development in the Carrington area of Trafford has taken a key step forward.
Trafford Council has appointed urban and rural place design practice and engagement specialists, Planit, to develop a Blue and Green Infrastructure Strategy to benefit wildlife and the people who will live, work and visit there.
The specialist team will also be responsible for a Design Code and Design Guidance for the New Carrington Masterplan, which includes proposals for a total of 5,000 new homes and 350,000sqm of new employment space, supported by a relief road.
Starting in December, community stakeholders will be invited to contribute ideas and suggestions for the areas green and blue spaces.
In February, the engagement programme will extend to local residents, who will be able to have their say as part of the design process, through in-person interactive sessions and web pages.
The engagement programme will seek input on key areas of the New Carrington Masterplan including new and enhanced landscape architecture, active travel routes, biodiversity, climate resilience measures and flood management, as well as the identity of the area.
The Blue and Green Infrastructure Strategy and Design Code, set to be finalised next summer, will set out how large-scale new development will fit into the existing landscape, communities and environments.
Cllr Liz Patel, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Economy and Regeneration said:
“We are delighted to welcome Planit on board to this exciting and ambitious programme.
“Further along in the process, we will want as many people as possible to contribute knowledge, experiences and perspectives to make sure we work together to develop the best ideas for everyone to ultimately enjoy and benefit from.”
Caleb Jones, Senior Urban Designer at Planit. adds:
“Planit is honoured to lead the New Carrington Blue and Green Infrastructure Project, an ambitious opportunity to deliver nature recovery and climate resilience at scale.
“Our regenerative design approach will shape a connected network of green and blue spaces that not only enhance biodiversity but also promote health, wellbeing, and long-term community stewardship of the land.
“By embedding circular principles and carbon-conscious strategies into every layer of design, we aim to create a place that enhances the quality of life of both local people and wildlife alike."
