Staying well and safe over Christmas and New Year

Trafford residents are being reminded of the local support available to help them stay well, safe and supported over the Christmas and New Year period.

Achieve – part of Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust – provides support around substance use, mental wellbeing, and access to advice, with clear guidance on how to reduce risks during the festive season.

Support from Achieve in Trafford

Achieve’s phone lines will be open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, excluding Bank Holidays, to support Trafford residents with prescriptions, advice and general queries.

Residents should check pharmacy opening times in advance, as Bank Holidays may affect collections on 25 and 26 December and 1 January.

Staying safe over the festive period

People are encouraged to take extra care over Christmas, particularly where alcohol or drugs may be involved. Key harm-reduction advice includes:

  • Carry Naloxone if you have it and make sure others know where it is
  • Avoid mixing substances and be cautious of unknown or synthetic drugs
  • "Start low and go slow” - tolerance can drop quickly after a break
  • Never share injecting equipment
  • If using alone, have a safety plan and someone to check in with.

If you or someone you know is struggling with their mental health over Christmas, support is available:

  • NHS 111 – Mental Health: call 111
  • Samaritans: 116 123
  • Shout Crisis Text Line: text SHOUT to 85258
  • If someone is in immediate danger: call 999 or attend A&E

Residents who are struggling with heating, food or isolation can access local support:

Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Healthy and Independent Lives, Cllr Jane Slater, said: 

“Christmas can be a difficult time for many people, particularly if you are dealing with health worries, financial pressures or feeling isolated. It is important that local people know that support is available throughout the festive period.

Whether you need help with your mental health, advice around substance use, or practical support like warm spaces and food provision, services such as Achieve is here to help you stay safe and well.”

Residents need to plan ahead, check opening times, and seek support early rather than waiting until a crisis point.
