Trafford smokers offered free “Easyway” to quit

Giving up smoking is one of the best things you can do to improve your health.

Now, Trafford residents who want to quit can access free support through the Allen Carr Easyway Stop Smoking Programme, funded by Trafford Public Health.

The online programme is designed to help people stop smoking without relying on willpower, nicotine replacement products or vaping. Delivered through a live online session lasting around five to six hours, the course aims to change the way participants think about smoking and help them quit for good.

The scheme is available to anyone who lives in Trafford or is registered with a Trafford GP and currently smokes. Residents from across the borough, especially areas with higher smoking rates including Stretford, Partington and St John’s are encouraged to apply.

One recent success story is Councillor Sarah Haughey, who represents the Longford Ward in Trafford, and had smoked for decades before taking part in the programme.

Although initially sceptical, she decided to give the programme a try and signed up.

She said:

"I wasn't expecting much from it. I didn't really do any research beforehand, but I thought it was worth giving it a go."

"The session made me look at smoking differently. It challenged a lot of the reasons I'd always told myself I enjoyed it.

"What astonished me most was how easy it was. There was no angst, no cravings and no feeling of having to force myself through it. I genuinely just didn't want a cigarette anymore."

Cllr Haughey says one of the biggest benefits has been the freedom that comes from no longer planning life around smoking.

"I realised smoking wasn't actually social at all. One of the biggest changes is not constantly thinking about when I can have my next cigarette. That's incredibly liberating."

She added: "I'd absolutely recommend the Allen Carr programme. If you want to stop smoking, it's a genuinely painless way to do it."

Cllr Jane Slater, Executive Member for Health and Wellbeing at Trafford Council, said:

"We know that giving up smoking can be incredibly difficult, which is why Trafford Public Health is funding places on the Allen Carr Easyway programme for local residents. Stopping smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health and wellbeing, but you do not have to do it alone."

"This programme offers free, expert support to help people break free from smoking and enjoy the many benefits that come with quitting, from improved health and fitness to having more money in your pocket. I would encourage anyone who smokes to take a look and book a place while spaces are available."

Giving up smoking can increase your life expectancy and reduce your risk of serious illnesses such as cancer, heart disease and stroke. Within weeks of quitting, circulation and lung function begin to improve, while over time the risk of smoking-related diseases falls significantly.

Trafford Public Health has initially purchased a limited number of places on the programme and demand is expected to be high. The uptake and outcomes will be reviewed to determine whether additional places will be funded in future.
