Trafford Council has officially backed a special enforcement policy designed to improve standards in the private rented housing sector.
The Council's Executive last night (Monday 21 September) formally approved the Renters Rights Enforcement Policy to help ensure safe, well-managed housing and fair treatment of tenants and responsible landlords.
The policy, launched in response to the Renters Rights Act 2025 which gives new rights to tenants and introduces new rules for private landlords, forms a framework for using enforcement powers, including penalties and prosecutions, and supports co-ordinated working across housing, trading standards, and tenancy relations.
With a co-ordinated approach across private sector housing, Trading Standards and HOST, the policy tackles non-compliance, targets rogue landlords and unsafe housing while supporting responsible landlords at the same time.
The Council can now manage increased enforcement responsibilities, while promoting transparency, legal compliance, and improved housing conditions across Trafford.
Cllr Rose Thompson, Trafford Council's Executive Member for Housing, Partnerships and Live Well, said:
"We have a duty to protect responsible landlords and tenants and the Renters Rights Enforcement Policy will do just that. But it will also target rogue landlords on all levels and ensure they are not treating tenants unfairly."
