Action was taken after Trafford Council served a notice on the owners of the buildings, the Suffolk-based brewery Greene King, under the Building Act 1984.

The Old Pelican Inn and Altrincham North Lodge on Manchester Road have been closed since 2020 but the buildings had become unsafe and insecure – with trespassers gaining entry, and fires reported, to the concerns of local people.

The Council’s notice signalled its intention to carry out emergency measures, including possible demolition, to deal with the dangerous buildings and block unauthorised access – with Greene King being expected to cover the cost of the work.

Following the notice being served, the 1930s mock Tudor building, built by renowned local architect George Wescott, and the lodges behind, have been boarded up and fenced off. The measures are set to keep the community safe, pending expected redevelopment of the site.

Cllr Rose Thompson, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Communities and Safety, said:

“We are pleased to see that the Old Pelican Inn and the Altrincham North Lodge have been secured to prevent any further trespassing.

“These are derelict and potentially dangerous buildings, having been closed and unused for several years, and our priority is that people stay away, to avoid risk of injury or worse.”
