Essential work to improve a 150-year-old brick railway bridge in Trafford will take place during May and June.
Ashley Road Railway Bridge in Hale will close between Heather Road and South Downs Road for several weeks to allow the refurbishments to take place. Signs advising of diversions will be in place.
The programme will maintain the safety and structural integrity of bridge number 171, which carries traffic over the Manchester-Holyhead railway line.
A water main will be refurbished and structural repairs to supports will be made. The carriageway will also be fully resurfaced between Heather Road and South Downs Road.
A full closure of Ashley Road will be in place from Tuesday 5 May until around Friday 26 June 2026, between Heather Road and South Downs Road. The exact completion date may depend upon weather changes.
Due to the nature of the work and safety requirements, no pedestrian access will be possible during the closure period.
Most activity will take place during the daytime between 7.30am and 5.30pm but some night-time working may be needed to fit in with railway requirements.
A spokesperson for Trafford Council said:
“We are working with partners to make sure that Ashley Road Railway Bridge continues to serve as an important and well-used travel route for many years to come. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the road closure as we work to improve and reopen the bridge.”
