£6.5m improvement programme set to begin on Trafford’s roads this spring

One Trafford, the partnership between Trafford Council and Amey, has announced a £6.5 million programme of resurfacing, footway improvements, traffic and road safety works, street lighting and drainage structures for 2026/27.

Work will begin in spring across the borough, with schemes chosen using the Council’s asset management process.

Full details of the programme will be published on the Trafford Council website soon. The announcement follows one of One Trafford’s busiest years for highways improvements.

In 2025/26, the partnership completed 5.569 km of resurfacing, 2.94 km of surface dressing, 18 large scale patching schemes, and upgrades to six footways, totalling more than 41,000 square metres of resurfacing — an area larger than five football pitches.

Major routes upgraded last year included Gaddum Road, sections of the A6144, the A56 near Denzell Gardens, the combined Redcylffe Circle / Trafford Boulevard scheme, and Sinderland Lane.

Extra funding from Transport for Greater Manchester and the Network North programme also enabled several additional schemes to be brought forward earlier than planned.

Alongside this, crews responded to a significant number of pothole reports. In 2025, 3,884 pothole‑related jobs were completed — the highest annual number recorded in Trafford since 2015.

Continued investment in resurfacing and surface dressing is designed to improve the long‑term condition of the road network and reduce the recurrence of defects.

Cllr Stephen Adshead, Executive Member for Highways, Environmental and Traded Services, said:

“This investment is a strong step forward in improving Trafford’s network for the long term.

"By using data to prioritise the areas that need attention most, and by coordinating works more carefully across neighbourhoods, we can ensure every pound delivers real value.

"This programme gives us a clear and confident plan for the year ahead, and we are committed to carrying out the work in a way that minimises disruption and delivers the lasting improvements residents deserve.”
