Reg Bown watched over Norris Road for 17 years in all weathers - and before that served nine years as a School Crossing Patrol outside Wellfield Infant School and Nursery.

His wife Anna, 85, is also a School Crossing Patrol notching up 27 years so far for Holy Family Catholic Primary School – and has no plans to retire just yet!

Trafford Council is an Age-friendly Employer, and is committed to the recruitment, retention and development of older workers.

Reg, who served in the RAF in the 1950s, first took up a lollipop after retiring from the printing industry. He says:

“I’ve loved the job, it’s so enjoyable – though you sometimes wonder what you’re doing when it’s icy or pouring with rain.

“There are plenty of grown adults around now who were helped over the road by me when they were younger. I’d carry on if I could! I’ve received so many cards for my retirement. I’ve had presents from children and a presentation in school, it’s been lovely.”

Anna, who used to be a bank cashier, adds:

“I love to see the kids and the families. It’s a very sociable line of work with plenty of opportunity to chat, and I’ve met so many people who have become friends. I’ve done 27 years this year.”

The couple, who have three children, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, have been featured on TV and radio over Easter.

A spokesperson for Trafford Council said:

“We’re delighted to wish Reg a happy retirement and equally pleased that Anna will stay on. Our School Crossing Patrols are highly valued members of staff.

“The Council and our school communities appreciate everyone who performs this role, to promote road safety and provide a reassuring presence for families in Trafford.”
