Resident fined £1k for dumping rubbish in alleyway

The resident left the sacks of rubbish - which included used nappies - in the alleyway between Stamford Street and Shrewsbury Street.

The offence was discovered when an officer from Trafford Council's Environmental Improvement team was carrying out patrols of know fly-tipping hotspots in the area. After searching the refuse sacks, officers established that the waste contained evidence that suggested it had come from a nearby property.

A resident was invited into an interview at Trafford Town Hall on 8 September 2026 and admitted the rubbish was theirs. Officers considered the offence and issued a £1,000 fixed penalty notice for the offence of fly-tipping.

Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) have recently gone up from £450 to £1,000 for offences such as leaving rubbish on roads, including next to street litter bins. Court action will continue to be taken for more serious instances involving larger quantities of waste, and the Council has the power to seize and crush cars and vans involved.

Cllr Stephen Adshead, Trafford Council's Executive Member for Highways, Environmental and Traded Services, said: 

"Trafford Council is totally committed to improving the environment and we will do everything we can to do just that. There is no excuse for littering and fly-tipping - and we have already prosecuted several people since we introduced bigger fines."

Cllr Tom Ross, Leader of Trafford Council, said: 

"The message is simple - if you fly-tip, we will come looking for you and you will face a fixed penalty fine of up to £1,000 or end up in court. Fly-tipping has a massive negative impact on our communities and we will continue to take strong action against those who do it."

If the fixed penalty notice for this offence is not paid, the case will be passed to the Council's legal team for prosecution. Residents can find out more about recycling waste in Trafford on the Council website.
