Trafford Council considers compulsory purchase of derelict house in Stretford
Trafford Council is planning to take legal action to save a derelict semi-detached home in Stretford from further ruin.
Trafford Council is planning to take legal action to save a derelict semi-detached home in Stretford from further ruin.
Councillors agreed a plan for a Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) on the address in Great Stone Road at an Executive meeting.
The property has been vacant since at least 2006. Recently, work to renovate and return the adjoining house to use is being impeded by its disrepair.
Housing shortages are a significant problem in Trafford and the home is one of 1,262 in the borough recorded as being empty for more than six months.
Other current work to bring vacant properties back into use includes Greater Manchester’s Empty Homes and Leasing Scheme, now under way in Trafford.
Cllr Liz Patel, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Economy and Regeneration, said:
“Empty homes put pressure on the housing market and we want this one to be renovated and brought back into occupation.
“If we do not act, the property is likely to continue to deteriorate. Our housing team works hard to encourage owners to take action to bring empty homes back into use and when this is not possible, we can look to measures such as Compulsory Purchase Order.”
