Wildfire smoke is affecting air quality in some areas of Greater Manchester

We are aware that air quality in Greater Manchester is being affected by smoke from wildfires.

This type of smoke can can irritate the eyes, nose, throat and lungs.

This causes only temporary symptoms for most healthy adults but it can have a greater impact on babies and young children, older people, those who are pregnant or have heart or lung conditions such as asthma, COPD or heart disease.

Staying away from smoke

If you can see or smell smoke we recommend that you:

  • Go indoors.
  • Avoid strenuous outdoor exercise.
  • Keep windows and doors closed while smoke levels are high.
  • Stay indoors during the smokiest periods, if temperatures allow.
  • Keep car windows closed and use the vehicle's recirculating air setting if available.

People are also urged to check on family members, neighbours and friends  at greater risk - particularly if they live alone or have respiratory or cardiovascular conditions.

Air quality can change quickly depending on wind and weather conditions.
