Neighbourhood planning

Neighbourhood planning gives local communities a chance to shape the future of their area.

A neighbourhood plan is a document created by a local community. It sets out planning policies for the use and development of land in that area. The process is led by a parish council. In areas without one, a neighbourhood forum can be set up.

These plans can influence:

  • where new homes, shops or offices are built
  • what new buildings should look like
  • the protection of local green space or heritage features

Plans must follow national and local policies. They go through several stages including evidence gathering, consultation and a public examination. Once approved by a local referendum, the plan is formally ‘made’ and becomes part of Trafford’s Development Plan.
