Your responsibilities as a business

Part of: Commercial waste

Contents

Businesses have a duty of care to organise their own commercial waste removal and recycling.

This duty of care includes:

  • Ensuring commercial waste is not disposed of illegally or fly-tipped
  • Disposing of commercial waste through a licensed contractor with a valid waste carrier license
  • Keeping documentary evidence for two years on how rubbish is disposed of

You must sign a Trade Refuse Agreement with a carrier who is legally authorised to carry waste and pay the charges.

You may take your own rubbish to a licensed disposal site, but you cannot use the Household Waste Recycling Centres for free tipping.

Commercial waste must not be disposed of in domestic bins, litter bins, or alleyways, and shop fronts must be kept clear at all times. Failure to comply with this can result in us issuing a fixed penalty notice.
