Commercial waste

Commercial waste

If you are trading as a business, any waste you produce is classified as commercial waste. This includes waste from any business activity you run from your home.

Unlike household waste, the council is not responsible for removing commercial waste. It is your business responsibility to correctly dispose of this waste.

If you or your carrier dispose of waste illegally, you could face legal action. Read more about fly-tipping.

New legislation from March 2025

From 31 March 2025, new legislation (known as Simpler Recycling) requires businesses, schools, hospitals, and other non-household premises in England to separate their recycling and food waste from their general waste.

Small businesses with fewer than 10 full-time employees have until 31 March 2027 to comply.

You will need to separate and recycle:

  • glass
  • metal
  • plastic, including cartons
  • paper and cardboard
  • food waste
