Request a larger grey bin

The standard size of the grey bin in Trafford is 140 litres. This is a slim bin.

You can request a larger grey bin if your household generates a significant amount of non-recyclable waste due to a large family, children in nappies, or certain medical conditions.

Criteria for more bin space

You may be eligible for a larger grey bin if your property has:

  • Five or more permanent residents
  • Any medical conditions that generate excessive amounts of non-recyclable waste
  • Two or more children in nappies

How we assess requests

Once we receive your request, we will check it against the above criteria.

A Waste Minimisation Officer will then visit to carry out a waste audit to confirm all bins are being used correctly and that there is a genuine need for extra grey bin space.

Approval

If your application for a larger grey bin is approved, an administration and delivery fee will apply. View our fees and charges. If this charge is not paid within 3 months of being approved, your request will be closed.

If your application is approved due to excessive medical waste, or someone at home is receiving end-of-life care, that household won’t have to pay the charge.

Non-Approval

If recycling is found in the grey bin during an audit, the request won’t be approved, even if they meet the criteria above. Residents can reapply, but the site will be checked again.

Rejected requests

If a request does not meet the criteria above, it will be rejected. Residents can reapply and give more information if they want.

If a waste audit shows the household doesn’t produce excessive general waste, the request will be rejected. Residents can reapply, but another audit will be carried out.

Review

If a property is approved for extra grey bin space, it will be reviewed every two years.

Bin sizes

Grey bins are available in three sizes: 140 litres, 240 litres, and 360 litres. Where possible, households will receive one larger bin rather than multiple smaller bins.

All bins remain the property of Trafford Council.
