Passenger Assistants are trained in basic First Aid and Epilepsy Awareness. However, in the event of an emergency, Travel Assistants will contact 999 for paramedic support.
They may choose to follow this Epilepsy Care Pathway or our Emergency Care Pathway.
Step 1
The passenger has a seizure in the vehicle.
Step 2
Assess the situation - are they in danger of injury?
Remove any objects or restraints that could cause injury or restrict the airway.
If the passenger is a wheelchair user, unfasten the arms, legs, chest, or head restraints. This will allow free movement.
Step 3
Remain in the vehicle and cushion the head, for example, with a jumper. Keep the head upright to ensure the airway stays open.
Step 4
Time how long the seizure is.
Step 5
Call 999 if:
- You think this is the first seizure
- The seizure is more than 5 minutes long
- There is one seizure after another without the passenger gaining consciousness inbetween
- You think the passenger needs urgent medical attention
- You have previously agreed with the passenger's parents to immediately call 999 if there is a seizure
Step 6
Protect the passenger from injury and remain with them until they come out of the seizure.
If you call the emergency services, wait with the passenger until they arrive.
Step 7
Call TTCU on 0161 912 5007. They will contact the parents and school.
