Installation of a home charge point

Part of: Charging an electric vehicle (EV) at home

Contents

If you want to install a charge point outside of your property boundary you will need to obtain permission from the landowner.

In most cases planning permission will not be required if the charge point is to be installed within an area lawfully used for off street parking.

For a wall mounted outlet, the casing should:

  • not exceed 0.2 cubic meters
  • face onto and be within 2m of the highway

For an upstand with an electrical outlet mounted on it, the upstand should

  • not exceed 1.6m in height from the level of the car parking surface
  • be within 2m of the highway

If your property is a listed building, you will need to seek planning and listed building consent. We have a free pre-app service for listed buildings.
