Scheme proposals
We are proposing changes to Seymour Grove.
The improvements aim to:
- create safer and more accessible crossing routes for children and parents.
- provide better facilities for people walking and cycling.
- enhance public spaces with additional landscaping and other improvements to the area, such as tree planting, street furniture and rain gardens.
- create a safer continuous active travel corridor linking the Seymour Grove / Talbot Road junction to the Manchester–Chorlton Cycleway.
- support improving public health as well as climate priorities.
We understand on-street and off-street parking is a key concern, and we’re working to ensure the scheme balances improved walking and cycling facilities with fair provision for vehicles.
Currently, many cars park on pavements. This creates difficulties for people using wheelchairs, pushchairs, or mobility aids. By keeping pavements clear, we’ll make the street safer and more welcoming for everyone.
Some laybys will be removed to make space for safer crossings and wider pavements. These improvements will mean easier and more comfortable access for families, older residents, and people with disabilities.
Scheme interventions and options
The proposed Seymour Grove Phase 2 scheme includes a number of interventions, and two design options that have been developed and presented to Transport for Greater Manchester to both be taken forward into consultation.
Both options provide:
- Cycle friendly “CYCLOPS” type facilities at the Kings Road and Ayres Road junctions with full pedestrian facilities
- Continuous crossings at side roads to give pedestrians and cyclists priority
- Formalised parking and laybys (where possible) to reducing car parking on footpaths and to make space for safer crossings and wider footways.
- Place-based improvement to the entrance to Seymour Park, and elsewhere, with landscaping and seating areas
- Linkages to the Chorlton and Seymour Grove / Talbot Road (T6) cycle track
Option 1
Cycle tracks on both sides of Seymour Grove, including an upgraded the pelican crossing near Stanley Road to a Toucan crossing.
Option 2
Two-way cycle track on the eastern side.
