Adaptations and help to live at home

Equipment and adaptations

The Council can provide equipment or home adaptations to help you live safely and independently. To find out if you are eligible, the Occupational Therapy team will do a needs assessment.

If you do not meet the criteria or want to act sooner, you can also buy or rent equipment privately. You can search for private suppliers on the Trafford Directory.

Who can get equipment or adaptations

We can provide equipment to those who live in Trafford and:

  • Have a permanent or substantial disability, or
  • Care for someone with a permanent or substantial disability

You can also apply if:

  • You have difficulties moving around your home
  • You find everyday tasks such as washing, dressing, or cooking difficult
  • You are recovering from illness or injury and need temporary support

How to apply

To apply for equipment or home adaptations, contact the Equipment and Adaptations Advice Line (EAAL) by calling 0345 299 0798. The line is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 12 noon and 1pm to 4pm.

Alternatively, email mft.eaal.osrc@nhs.net

What happens next

Following completion of a needs assessment, your Occupational Therapist (OT) or Disabled Living Advisor will send us their recommendations. We will then allocate your case to an Adaptations Officer.

The Adaptations Officer will:

  • Contact you and arrange a home visit
  • Check that the proposed adaptation meets your needs
  • Make sure the adaptation is practical, safe, and suitable for your home
  • Carry out a preliminary financial check; you may be required to complete a means test
  • Confirm it complies with the rules for a Disabled Facilities Grant (if relevant)

If you rent your home, your landlord may need to give consent before the work can go ahead.

Cost for equipment and adaptations

Minor adaptations

There is no cost for minor home adaptations or community equipment under £1000, including:

  • Handrails
  • Grab rails
  • Stair rails

Major adaptations

Larger works costing over £1000 are classed as major adaptations. These include:

  • Installing a shower
  • Stairlifts
  • Through-floor lifts
  • Hoists
  • Creating a ground-floor bathroom or toilet
  • Widening doors
  • Changing bedroom layouts

If your assessment recommends a major adaptation, you may be able to apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) or a Moving Assistance Grant.
