Selling food for delivery

Part of: Starting a food business

Contents

If you are selling food for delivery, you must legally follow a standard procedure. This includes selling food via the internet, text messaging, phone calls, or mail order.

You can find complete guidance on the Food Standards Agency website.

Register your food delivery business

When you start a food delivery business, you must register your business at least 28 days before opening. The Trafford Environmental Health team and Trading Standards can offer more advice on legal requirements.

Other things to consider

  • Food sent by post or courier must be delivered in a way that ensures it remains fit for human consumption.
  • Food that needs refrigerating should be delivered as quickly as possible, ideally overnight, and may require packing in an insulated box with a coolant gel or in a cool bag.
  • All packaging should protect food against mechanical damage and sources of contamination while in transit.
