Starting a food business
If you are starting a food business in Trafford, or taking ownership of one, you must follow a specific process. If you are using unprocessed animal food products, you may also need to apply for our approval.
For business start-up support or advice, email our Inclusive Economy and Communities Team at business@trafford.gov.uk.
1. Register the business
You must register your business with the Council at least 28 days before opening or taking ownership of your food business. Read more about registering a food business.
You may also need planning consent or a street trader's licence, depending on the nature of your business.
2. Get trained in food hygiene
Food handlers should complete food hygiene training that matches their duties. Details of training courses are available on our food hygiene training pages.
3. Put a food safety management system in place
You are required to have a written food safety management system based on Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) principles.
To do this, use the free guidance from the Food Standards Agency (FSA).
4. Comply with minimum hygiene requirements
Your food business needs to comply with minimum hygiene requirements.
For more advice about good food hygiene, or to request an officer visit before you start trading, read our food hygiene advice page.
Most food businesses that sell food to the consumer will be subject to a food hygiene rating score after being inspected. This will be published on a national website, which anyone can view.
