Dangerous wild animals licence

Overview

You need a licence from us to keep certain species of wild animals. This is a legal requirement under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976.

The species covered are listed in the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976 (Modification) Order 1984.

You may be fined up to £2,000 if you:

  • keep a dangerous wild animal without a licence
  • breach licence conditions
  • obstruct or delay an inspector or vet

We may also seize, rehome or destroy the animal. Any costs will be charged to the keeper.
