Overview
You need a licence from us to run a zoo. This is a legal requirement under the Zoo Licensing Act 1981.
If you operate without a licence or breach licence conditions you may be:
- prosecuted and fined up to level 4 (currently £2,500)
- required to close the zoo
- subject to enforcement action to protect animal welfare
Your first licence will last for four years. If you renew your licence, it will last for six years.
