How your application will be decided

Part of: Zoo licence

Contents

Before granting or refusing a licence we will:

  • consult the police, fire authority and relevant conservation bodies
  • consult neighbouring authorities if the zoo crosses boundaries
  • consider objections from the public
  • arrange an inspection by appointed inspectors

You will be given at least 28 days’ notice of the inspection.

We may refuse a licence if the applicant, or anyone involved in managing or keeping animals at the zoo, has been convicted of animal welfare offences.

Appeals

If we refuse your application or impose conditions you do not agree with, you can appeal to the Magistrates’ Court within 28 days.

You can also appeal against:

  • refusal to transfer a licence
  • a zoo closure direction
  • enforcement steps for unmet conditions
