Apply for a zoo licence

Part of: Zoo licence

We can only grant a licence if:

  • the zoo will not affect public health, safety, or law and order
  • the zoo has suitable accommodation, staffing and management for animal welfare
  • appropriate conservation measures will be in place

Notice of application

Before you apply you need to give us written notice about your intention to apply. This must be done at least two months before your application. 

You will also need to:

  • publish a notice in one local and one national newspaper
  • display a copy of the notice at the proposed site

Notice requirements

The notice must include:

  • the location of the zoo
  • types and numbers of animals to be kept
  • arrangements for accommodation, welfare and staff
  • expected visitor numbers and access arrangements
  • how conservation measures will be met
