You need a premises licence if you want to use a venue for:
- selling alcohol by retail
- providing regulated entertainment such as live or recorded music, plays, films, indoor sports or dancing
- serving hot food or drink to the public between 11pm and 5am (late night refreshment)
This applies to a wide range of premises, including:
- pubs, bars and nightclubs
- restaurants, cafés and hotels that serve alcohol
- supermarkets and convenience stores selling alcohol
- takeaways and food outlets open after 11pm
- theatres, cinemas and indoor sports venues
- community halls, church halls and similar venues used for events
If alcohol is sold, the premises must have a Designated Premises Supervisor (DPS) who holds a personal licence.
