Premises licence (new or variation)

You need a premises licence if you want to use a venue for:

  • selling alcohol by retail
  • providing regulated entertainment such as live or recorded music, plays, films, indoor sports or dancing
  • serving hot food or drink to the public between 11pm and 5am (late night refreshment)

This applies to a wide range of premises, including:

  • pubs, bars and nightclubs
  • restaurants, cafés and hotels that serve alcohol
  • supermarkets and convenience stores selling alcohol
  • takeaways and food outlets open after 11pm
  • theatres, cinemas and indoor sports venues
  • community halls, church halls and similar venues used for events

If alcohol is sold, the premises must have a Designated Premises Supervisor (DPS) who holds a personal licence.
