The Digital Switchover
The UK’s telephone network is changing.
By the end of 2027, Openreach will retire the old analogue Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and move all services to a fully digital network.

What is The Digital Switchover?
Openreach is phasing out the PSTN (a network of copper wire phone lines used by traditional landlines) and replacing it with digital services that use fibre and internet-based technology. This includes switching to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), which carries voice calls over a broadband connection.
The transition is already underway across the UK. Telephone providers will be contacting their customers to explain what this means and how to prepare.
The PSTN is a privately-owned analogue telecoms network, and the decision to upgrade it was taken by the telecoms industry.
Why it matters
The switchover will affect everyone in Trafford, including residents, businesses and schools.
It's not just your phone service that may be impacted. Many other systems that rely on analogue phone lines will need to be updated, including:
- Burglar and personal alarms
- Telecare devices (e.g., fall monitors, lifelines)
- EPOS (electronic point of sale) machines
- Payment lines
- Door entry systems
- CCTV
- Fax machines
- Building energy management systems (BEMS)
