Animal disease outbreaks
Part of:
Animal health and welfare
We have a statutory role in preventing and controlling the spread of animal diseases such as Foot and Mouth Disease, Bluetongue, and Avian influenza (Bird Flu) during outbreaks. Read more about animal and plant health on GOV.UK.
Bird Flu
As of 15 May 2025, Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) housing measures in England are now lifted.
You can let your birds outside as long as you are not in a protection zone or a captive bird (monitoring) controlled zone. Find out what zone you're in.

Register your birds and poultry
If you keep poultry or other captive birds at any premises in England or Wales, you must register within one month. This includes any birds you keep as pets.
You are breaking the law if you do not register.
