Transport and vehicle noise

Part of: Noise pollution

An action plan for Manchester has been adopted to manage noise from roads, railways, and aviation, in line with government policy on sustainable development.

Noise maps help authorities identify areas that need to be addressed. Read more about noise maps.

The Highways Agency handles motorways, the local council handles other roads, and various bodies are responsible for rail noise.

Manchester Airport

Manchester Airport is the main source of noise from air traffic within the borough.

The Airport is committed to managing aircraft noise to minimise impacts on communities living around the airport. Read their noise action plan.

Noise from vehicles

Noise from unattended vehicles on the highway (e.g. vehicle alarms) can be dealt with under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

Report noise from an unattended vehicle

You can report noise from off-road motorcycles to the Police via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
